Review: The latest adaptation of ‘The Crow’ is an intriguing retelling of a classic story. It starts with a captivating premise of two flawed individuals, Eric Draven and Shelly Webster, whose love story feels organic and deeply rooted in genuine chemistry. This relationship is the heartbeat of the film, with their moments together driving the narrative forward and providing the emotional anchor that holds the movie together.
The film is strongest when Eric and Shelly share the screen, their love palpable and their connection undeniable. For those unfamiliar with the original or previous reboot attempts, the plot might keep you guessing. However, fans of the story may find it somewhat predictable, as the overall narrative follows a familiar path.
Rupert Sanders, the director, seems enamored with the darkness that pervades the story. His direction brings a slow-burning, almost romanticised portrayal of this darkness, which is visually stunning and deeply impactful on the viewer. However, this indulgence also becomes the film's Achilles' heel. The narrative begins to drag, especially after the initial twist, with the pacing slowing to a crawl until the climax. It’s only in the final act that the film regains its momentum, delivering a powerful and relentless conclusion. Bill Skarsgard is brilliant as the revengeful lover, who can go to any lengths to exact revenge for the love of his life. FKA Twigs exudes the kind of warmth, vulnerability and mystical strength that was needed for this violent love story.
